Oracle attend the launch of the new DaVinci© Robot's UK headquarters in Oxford

Oracle were delighted to attend the new offices and training facilities for the DaVinci© Robot at The Oxford Science Park.

The da Vinci© Surgical System is a computer-enhanced surgical robot designed to mimic a surgeon’s hand and wrist movements. This enables them to perform incredibly delicate procedures through the smallest of incisions. Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat head and neck cancers and may give patients a better quality of life as opposed to conventional surgery. Conventional surgery for head and neck cancer is an extremely complex procedure that requires making a large incision up the neck, splitting the lip and splitting the jaw bone to remove a tumour at the back of the throat.

With robotic surgery, the surgeon can access the tumour without making incisions in the neck resulting in faster recovery times and the reduced risk of infection.

Oracle's head of fundraising, Teresa (pictured above) tried out the demonstration unit which is controlled by a console. The robotic surgery unit has an in-built control to minimise any hand tremor or unexpected movements.

Oracle is currently funding a pioneering nationwide robotic surgery project under the supervision of leading head and neck surgeon and robotic surgery expert Prof Vin Paleri.
